Figure Eight

The figure 8 knot is one of the must useful knots used in climbing. It is a good "stop" knot to bulk the end of a rope or cord. This knot is ultimately better alternative to the Thumb knot, because it does not jam as easily. Most importantly, the knot is easy to tie and can be undone just as effortlessly, especially when stress has been applied to the rope. Furthermore, this knot can be tied at any part of the knot, but if tied at an end a stopper knot should be applied at the end to ensure it does not come undone.

You can make good use of this knot by tying it at the end of a frayed rope temporarily before it is whipped.
