Change in Adult membership Policy

posted Aug 2, 2015, 7:54 AM by Thomas Smith

, July 27, 2015 the Boy Scouts of America announced a change to the adult membership policy. This change was approved by the national leadership and the national executive board.

Watch the video below to hear the important message from Dr. Robert M. Gates on the adult leadership policy change and read his remarks here.

This new policy will remove the organization's ban on homosexual leaders, and instead allow each chartering organization to set its own membership standards for adults. The announcement by the BSA, frequently asked questions, and other information may be found here.

The Monmouth Council is wholly supportive of this change. It is the council's belief that allowing chartered organizations to select their own adult leadership, as they always have, will make Scouting a more diverse, welcoming, and larger community.  It has always been the council's mission to serve as many young people as possible in Central New Jersey. This change helps make that possible.

Because this change empowers chartered organizations to set the adult membership standards for their units, it is a completely local decision how and if this change affects your unit. The council will be wholly supportive of every unit's decision in this matter, as will the BSA national organization.

Every family deserves the opportunity to join Scouting. This policy will allow more families to join our movement, and create a more diverse organization where people can be totally accepted no matter what their religious belief is. The council supports, and celebrates that.

The council understands this is a complex issue, and that there may be questions. If you do have questions, or are contacted by a third party to comment on this, please directly them to our Scout Executive, Mike Mahon .

Council President
