Hike Saturday October 25

posted Oct 10, 2014, 5:38 PM by Doug Gifford

As we announced on Wednesday, we will be going on a hike on Saturday October 25.  We are planning a six to seven mile loop hike along the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park near Tuxedo, NY.   This particular hike is not overly demanding and we are confident all of the boys will be able to enjoy it.  Parents are encouraged to join us as well.

We will meet at 7AM and I expect we will be back in Howell by 6 or 7 PM

We have done this hike several times before and the scouts have always enjoyed it.  This will be a great opportunity for those scouts that haven't been out hiking with us to try it out (and I'm sure we'll sign off a few rank requirements off along the way).

If you have not been hiking before, don't run out and buy any gear, at least not until you've been out once to see if you like it. The Backpacking Ten Essentials are listed on the Troop website under Literature.  Please review this list while preparing for the hike.

At a minimum you will need:

  • A backpack - if you don't have a backpack, an old school backpack will do fine for this hike
  • Water - I would suggest 2 liters
  • Lunch - Dehydrated meals, (we will have backpacking stoves with us) or anything non perishable.
  • Snacks - Trail mix, dried fruit, power bars etc
  • Rain gear hiking boots - no sneakers
  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Insect repellent, sun screen
  • Personal first aid kit if you have one

If you have any questions please speak with Mr. Jaichner, Mr. Equils or me.

We will have a sign up sheet Wednesday.  Permission slips will be due by October 22.

The permission slip is attached
