Hike September 6

posted Aug 24, 2014, 5:39 AM by Doug Gifford

We're kicking off the new year with a hike in Harriman State Park in New York on September 6.  All scouts First Class and above are invited to join us.

We are planning a six to seven mile hike along the Appalachian Trail in a beautiful area of NY.   The highlight of the hike will be the Lemon Squeezer, an interesting rock formation that the Appalachian Trail passes through.  It should be a great hike.  We have done this hike two or three time before and the scouts have always enjoyed it.  This will be a great opportunity for those scouts that haven't been out hiking with us to try it out.

Since we will not have a meeting before the hike, we will not have our normal sign up sheets.  I ask that anyone who is interested contact me directly. Please let me know if you will have a ride or need transportation.  All parents and leaders are invited to join us.  Please contact me at:

What to bring?
If you have not been hiking before, don't run out and buy any gear, at least not until you've been out once to see if you like it. The Backpacking Ten Essentials are listed on the Troop website under Literature.  Please review this list while preparing for the hike.

At a minimum you will need:
  • A backpack - if you don't have a backpack, an old school backpack will do fine for this hike
  • water - I would suggest 2 liters, more if you will be cooking
  • lunch - Dehydrated meals, (we will have backpacking stoves with us) or anything non perishable. For some reason Spam is usually a hit. (I will probably bring a block of cheese and a small salami or sausage as an example)
  • snacks - Trail mix, dried fruit, power bars etc
  • Rain gear (Mr Smith probably won't be joining us but just in case...)
  • hiking boots - no sneakers
  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Insect repellent, sun screen
  • personal first aid kit if you have one
We will meet at the Wawa on Rt 9 North, near Sunnyside Road, at 7AM.  It is about a 2 hour drive to the trail head off of Rt 17 near Tuxedo, NY.  We will provide driving directions on the 6th.

I have attached a permission slip.  Please print it out, complete it, and bring it on the 6th.  We will collect these before we leave.

Do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions.  I'm looking forward to a great day and another great year of scouting
